About Us

Burgess Rural is an Australian privately owned company that has been investing in agriculture since 1979 with its first 268 hectare property “Laurie Park” at Kalkallo Victoria. In 1990 Lockerbie Merino Stud was registered, a name that was to become synonymous with quality merino breeding, including significant rural show awards. As their success grew, the Burgess Rural holdings increased in Victoria and diversified into other rural regions.

Today Burgess Rural manages land holdings totaling 10,681 hectares with properties in Central Victoria and the Riverina (NSW). Although primarily a sheep operation (approximately 30,000 breeding ewes annually producing more than 24,000 lambs and 14,500 wethers), Burgess Rural also annually crops 497 hectares (rotating canola, wheat and barley) as well as managing 2,000 head of cattle.

Our breeding operations are vertically integrated and span four locations from self-replicating merino breeding to a dual-purpose breeding producing first-cross ewes that are then used for fat lamb breeding. Burgess Rural believes this approach helps to continually improve its genetics keeping only its best breeders and selecting its replacement rams according to the best ASBV and breeding data available.
